Membership
CANENA’s strength and success comes from its committed volunteer members representing
the industry leaders from manufacturers, SDO’s and other associations. There would be no
CANENA if not for its members. It is the continuous, active participation by various electrical
industry product sectors in each country that is the catalyst for CANENA’s activities.
There are several hundred individuals and more than 100 organizations that are actively
involved in CANENA membership, in various commitment levels. The organizational structure includes:
- The Council
- The Executive Committee of the Council
- The Audit Committee
- Over 30 Technical Harmonization Committees (THC) and Technical Harmonization Subcommittees (THSC)

Kinds of Members
Company Member, Company Member-Sponsoring, Company Member-Sustaining
All Company Members: Company membership enables individual companies
with multiple CANENA members to pay dues conveniently with only one annual dues payment.
For one annual dues payment, company members are permitted to have an unlimited number of individual
CANENA memberships and THC participants. All employees of a company, in all countries within the
region of the Americas, are covered by one company membership. Up to ten individuals under a company
membership can be designated as “voting representatives” for the purpose of Council votes.
Company membership is expected to create greater awareness of CANENA at higher levels within our
individual members’ funding organizations.
Company Member-Sponsoring: Sponsoring company members provide CANENA with an
additional annual contribution above the annual dues payment. This additional contribution is
designated to help offset CANENA’s annual administrative expenses. CANENA benefits from substantial
in-kind administrative resources from many sources. Helping to increasingly offset the expense of these
resources is an objective of the Executive Committee.
Sponsoring member companies receive special recognition on the CANENA website and at the CANENA
Annual General Meeting.
Company Member-Sustaining: Sustaining company members provide CANENA with a
substantive annual contribution above the annual due payment. This additional contribution is
designated to help fund the Council’s strategic initiatives. CANENA members strongly suggested in the
2007 member survey, that the Council needs to more broadly communicate its purpose and value in the
region beyond North America, and at higher levels in the funding organizations of our members.
Sustaining member companies receive special recognition on the CANENA website and at the CANENA
Annual General Meeting. In addition, each sustaining member company is invited to become a member of
the new Sustaining Company and Association Advisory Committee (SCAAC).
Association Member
CANENA benefits from substantial in-kind administrative resources from many sources,
but notably from the industry trade associations of many of our members. Those associations
acknowledge that a majority of their members benefit from the results in CANENA, not just those
members that directly participate in the Council or its technical programs.
All electro-technical manufacturer trade associations or chambers, professional societies, and
other stakeholder associations are invited to become a sustaining association member of CANENA for
one annual dues contribution. The CANENA Executive Committee will award Association membership,
without additional dues payment, to those organizations who already provide substantive financial or
in-kind resources to the Council.
Association members receive special recognition on the CANENA website and at the CANENA Annual
General Meeting. In addition, each association member is invited to become a member of the new
Sustaining Company and Association Advisory Committee (SCAAC).

Annual General Meeting Sponsorship
Beginning in 2009, CANENA will accept individual or group sponsorships in the amount of $250.00 USD or more designated to offset the cost of programs and administration associated with the CANENA Annual General Meeting. Such sponsorship are above and beyond annual dues or other membership class fees.
Responsibilities of Membership
The success of CANENA has and will always depend on its membership, a diverse multi-national
group of competing manufacturers, standards development organizations (SDO) and certification
organizations (CO). Whether strategically created or formed by a “big bang” resulting from NAFTA,
CANENA is a necessary model for standardization in a global economy.
CANENA members have always maintained as their highest priority and sole objective the voluntary
harmonization of standards among willing participants. Clearly however, the interface of CANENA’s
activities with similar standardization bodies in the region of the Americas, in other world regions,
and IEC cannot be ignored.
The CANENA model has developed into an environment that is conducive to accomplishment of its
member’s objectives. The result of the work programs of CANENA Technical Harmonization Committees is
fewer standards, fewer different requirements and tests, and a clearer understanding of remaining
differences. Participating SDOs have benefited from the expanded pool of voluntary technical experts to
fuel standards development and these experts are more efficiently used in both development and
maintenance processes. When a harmonized standard is adopted through normal channels in each
participating country, the result is lower cost access to the markets in each country for the product
manufacturers, more consistent application of the standards by the accredited COs and more choices for
the consumers in each country.
Its continuing role as facilitator is truly the only objective of CANENA. The only strategic
direction the Council’s Executive Committee has is to satisfy its members in this role by providing a
minimal infrastructure of organization and procedures under which manufacturers, SDOs and COs can
continue to cooperate to reach common goals. The CANENA model has been very successful in this regard.
Increasingly, the CANENA model and the Council’s diverse membership is being seen as an inviting forum for exploring broader cooperation within the scope of electro-technical standardization.
The CANENA model, while effectively serving its members must not be seen as a threat, but rather a complement in our evolving regional standardization environment.
