CANENA Improves Website Reporting System & Project Harmonization

With 98 regionally harmonized Standards currently its portfolio, the CANENA Secretariat has been working diligently to provide greater transparency in its reporting system used to track the progress on harmonization projects. The goal is to ensure that participating Standards development organizations, industry trade associations, and participants better collaborate, are made aware of requests, and receive status updates.

The CANENA Executive Committee approved a 2020 proposal to restructure the CANENA Standards Development portion of its website to prominently position the project harmonization requests and streamline the technical committee page. This change will reduce the time required to locate and refresh CANENA project trackers as well as allow committees to streamline project management.

2020 General Secretary Report

In any given year, about a third of the CANENA portfolio is undergoing revision. This year 14 project harmonization requests have been submitted and are actively being considered for approval by Underwriters Laboratories (UL), CSA Group, and Asociación de Normalización y Certificación, A.C. Once approved, these requests will expand the CANENA Standards portfolio.

Since 1995, CANENA has been committed to the development of harmonized electrotechnical codes, Standards, and uniform conformity assessment methods. This year marks our 28th anniversary, and it would be remiss of me not to acknowledge the tremendous contributions of the U.S. electroindustry, the broader CANENA community, and our company sponsors. I extend my sincere appreciation for the vital, sustaining support from UL, CSA Group, and the Asociación de Normalización y Certificación, A.C. Our volunteer officers have renewed faith in the principle that the private sector-led systems must develop electrotechnical safety Standards with government and regulators as active and equal partners. As such, CANENA remains an industry-driven initiative, knitting together the national quality infrastructure of the U.S., Canada, and Mexico to provide needed assurance to its Members that they can design one product that will be installed and used as intended in North America.

Thank you to all the contributors and volunteers that support CANENA. Without you, the inherent challenges in harmonizing electrotechnical requirements in the Americas would remain only a vision of the future and not the reality we enjoy today.
