CANENA Technical Programs

CANENA is a volunteer-based organization focused on electrotechnical standards harmonization activities within the Americas, helping to facilitate trade.  It has become a critical element of the National Quality Infrastructure of Canada, Mexico and the United States, having a portfolio of regionally harmonized standards of ninety-eight (98) published standards and growing.  In 2019, there was $45 billion in North America electroindustry trade flows, facilitated in part by CANENA standards.

CANENA has forty-three (43) electrotechnical standards harmonization committees in operation. Those committees have published fifty-seven (57) harmonized standards as tri-national standards by ANCE, CSA and UL; and an additional twenty-six (26) published as bi-national standards by CSA and UL. Regarding the publication of harmonized standards based on an IEC standard, there was a total of nine (9) harmonized tri-national standards published by ANCE, CSA and UL; and an additional six (6) harmonized bi-national standards published jointly by CSA and UL.

Publications by the Numbers

Harmonization aims to reinforce the safety of electrical products placed on the internal markets of participating countries.  It takes into account new technological developments and consensus engineering judgement in order to ensure a high level of protection of human safety and reinforces essential safety requirements which electrical products must comply when made available on the market. Maintaining these standards is viewed by regulators as providing a public good and ensures the public has access to the most recent product iteration.
